The end of the year is rapidly approaching and many students are starting to look for holiday retail jobs. If you have not had a retail job before it can be difficult to know where to start - here are some tips!
Now is a great time to be looking for your first retail job as many retailers are increasing their staff numbers to prepare for the busy Christmas trading period – but be sure not to leave applying too late as most retailers will have hired all their Christmas casual staff before the end of November.
When applying for retail jobs the first thing you need to do is prepare a resume or CV. In your CV you will need to include your contact details along with past work experience, applicable skills and qualifications. Before applying for roles have a think about the type of retailer you would like to work for. Ask yourself where you like to shop or what products are you passionate about – eg. fashion, technology, books, sporting goods? You are more likely to be successful in your application if you apply for a job which genuinely interests you and you will enjoy working there more too!

Also keep an eye out in shop windows for help wanted signs or even better go in with your CV and ask the store manager if there are any vacancies.
In an entry level retail role you will most likely be expected to focus on customer service so it is important that you demonstrate to prospective employers that you are friendly and able to interact with customers and make sales.
