Northern Territory facing plastic bag ban

In a move toward becoming more green the Northern Territory is going to implement a plastic bag ban, similar to the ban that’s running in Southern Australia. It won’t ban the use of all bags, but will mean that retailers will not be able to provide single use plastic bags.

The ban is not set to be in full force until June 2011. At this time, customers can expect to get their shopping in either

  • Reusable Green Bags (bags made of heavy polypropylene, that can be used more than 100 times)
  • heavier retail bags
  • Biodegradable bags
  • Recycled plastic bags bought in by shoppers
  • Barrier Bags (the kind that come from a roll and are often used for fruit and vegetables in the supermarket.
